Between el Santuario de Chimayo and Las Trampas:
Distance (one way): 17.4 miles.
Total Elevation Gain: About 1350’ from Chimayo (6075’) to Las Trampas (7424’).
Difficulty: Difficult
This pilgrimage will allow you to visit some of the most remote and beautiful churches in the United States. The descent from Trampas to Santuario de Chimayo is steep but the road is fairly quiet. The 8 miles between Trampas and Las Truchas are along a well-paved and quiet road with rolling ascents and descents as it winds along the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
Along the way you can visit:
Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary), which is 0.3 miles on the turnoff that will take you to the center of Truchas.
San Antonio de Cordova Church, by taking the turnoff from Hwy 76 at Cordova and follow it 1.1 miles to San Antonio Church.
With the exception of Santuario de Chimayo the other churches are not normally open and you should make arrangements ahead of time if you wish to visit them.
It is strongly suggested that you make this pilgrimage over a period of at least two days. Parking, lodging and food are available in Chimayo. Las Trampas has very few accomodations. There are Bed & Breakfast accomodations in and around Truchas about 8 miles away.
