Who is the Lord of Esquipulas?
Devotion to the Lord or Christ of Esquipulas originated in Santiago de Esquipulas, Guatemala. From there it spread throughout Central America and Mexico and arrived in New Mexico at the beginning of the 19th century, exactly in 1810, when Don Bernardo Abeyta found the crucifix that since then presides over the Chapel of the Christ of Esquipulas in the Sanctuary
of Chimayo.
The uniqueness of the devotion to the Christ of Esquipulas is characterized
by its communication of a way of understanding and assuming pain, suffering, and even death, with an attitude contrary to resignation and passivity.
The cross on which Jesus is nailed is green to represent that the holy wood is alive, hence, upon approaching we can see the sprouts that have begun to sprout from him. It is a sign that announces that the death of Christ on the cross does not bring more death or condemnation to the world, but life and blessings for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.
¿Quién es el Señor de Esquipulas?
La devoción al Señor o Cristo de Esquipulas se originó en Santiago de Esquipulas, Guatemala. Desde allí se extendió por todo Centro América, México y llegó a Nuevo México a principios del siglo XIX, exactamente en 1810, cuando don Bernardo Abeyta encontró el crucifijo que desde entonces preside la Capilla del Cristo de Esquipulas en el Santuario de Chimayo.
La singularidad de la devoción al Cristo de Esquipulas se caracteriza porque comunica una manera de comprender y asumir el dolor, el sufrimiento, e incluso, la muerte, con una actitud contraria a la resignación y la pasividad.
La cruz sobre la que está clavado Jesús es de color verde para representar que el madero santo está vivo, de ahí, que acercándonos podemos ver los retoños que han comenzado a brotar de él. Es una señal que anuncia que la muerte de Cristo en la cruz no trae más muerte o condenación al mundo sino vida y bendiciones para quienes tienen ojos para ver y oídos para escuchar.
