El Santuario de Chimayó

15 Santuario Drive

Chimayó, NM 87522

  • Holy Family Chapel

  • Native American Chapel

  • Holy Child of Atocha Chapel

  • Chapel of our Lord of Espuipulas

At El Santuario de Chimayó, our chapels hold historical significance. The first is the Chapel of our Lord of Espuipulas, which also houses el pocito — the small pit of sacred holy dirt that has drawn pilgrims for generations. A short walk away stands the Holy Child of Atocha Chapel, built in 1857.

These chapels serve as the destination of an Easter pilgrimage tradition now spanning several generations. The pilgrimage traces its origins to the American soldiers and sailors who prayed to Santo Niño de Atocha during the Bataan Death March. Upon returning home, they made their way to Chimayó to give thanks for their survival — and in doing so, began a living tradition that continues to grow each year.
